The Citadel
The Waldonian Citadel (formerly the Birdonian Citadel) is a gigantic megastructure located in the heart of Widdlington and stands as one of Waldonia's most iconic landmarks. At 1,700 feet tall, it dominates the Widdlington skyline, looming ominously over the city as a constant reminder of the power held by those who dwell within. The Citadel serves as the main base of operations and primary headquarters of the Waldonian Government. It's imposing presence makes it the ideal home for any aspiring tyrant.
The Citadel’s design presents a stark contrast between its imposing exterior and its unexpectedly warm interiors. The exterior of the Citadel is a testament to brutalist architecture, characterized by its cold, sleek lines and monolithic concrete facade that dominates the Widdlington skyline. Its towering, angular form exudes an aura of stern authority and permanence. However, the interior offers a surprising shift in atmosphere. Inside, the government offices and chambers are adorned with rich wooden paneling, plush furnishings, and intricate, classic decor that contrasts sharply with the building’s austere exterior. This fusion of cold, industrial exteriors with cozy, wood-furnished interiors reflects a deliberate attempt to balance the Citadel's formidable presence with a more welcoming, functional environment for its occupants.
The Citadel was constructed at an impossibly fast rate during the "Birdonia" crisis in the year of our Ed, 2022, by the mad dictator Reginald "Reg" Harvey Van Der Beak. The tower's design bears a striking resemblance to the citadel from Half-Life 2, leading to speculation that it may have been directly imported into the city by Ed. Since its construction, the Citadel has become a magnet for those seeking power.
Former Mayor Harris Travers infamously attempted to relocate the Citadel a few blocks down the road from the Volkov district to a more prestigious area of Waldobury, a ridiculously expensive plan that was ultimately thwarted. In response, Travers abandoned his town hall office and moved into the Citadel, where he soon went mad with power and declared himself the first Waldonian Emperor. The Citadel would later house the Prime Minister, various government offices, ministers, and departments.
