skyline

"The crown jewel and capital of Waldonia, Widdlington was founded as a small fish market in the 7th century. It has since evolved into a city with remarkable architectural diversity and a dense urban environment. Its charm is matched only by its turbulent nature. It’s a delightfully cozy place to visit, but be warned, dear traveler: things can often turn very quickly and quite dramatically in Widdlington. The city also has the honour of hosting the highest population of fine, upstanding white goblins of good character, such as our national treasure and Mayor, Harris Travers, and serves as the current home of the elusive Masters Council." - Samuel Waldo, 2023

However, Widdlington is also known for its eccentric and volatile population. “The Editor is like a kid with a magnifying glass, and Widdlingtonians are his favorite ants to torment.” - Master Devlin

Architecture and Urban Design

The city’s architecture reflects a fusion of British, Japanese, Italian, Eastern European, and American influences. Notable features include narrow, medieval-like streets, car-free zones, and the towering Citadel, which symbolizes Widdlington’s political significance.

Transportation

Widdlington features a unique transportation system centered around an innovative airship service that facilitates both local and county-wide travel. The city’s infrastructure is predominantly pedestrian-focused, with extensive walking paths and limited vehicle access. While Widdlington is often described as "car-free since 2003," this is not entirely accurate; vehicle licenses are available but require a valid reason.

In addition to walking, bicycles and e-scooters are popular modes of transport, providing convenient and eco-friendly options for residents. Horse-drawn carriages and rickshaws can also be seen around the city, although they, like buses, are restricted to the main roads. This diverse range of transportation options complements Widdlington’s pedestrian-friendly environment and contributes to its distinctive charm and character.

Education

Widdlington hosts a range of educational institutions, including two primary schools and one secondary school. While these schools provide essential education, the general populace tends to have a more relaxed attitude towards formal schooling, favoring practical experience over academic pursuits.

The renowned Waldonian University is a distinguished institution that attracts a select group of students, approximately 7% of the city's population. Known for its rigorous and enigmatic curriculum, the university’s campus is steeped in an air of mystery. Its grand, ivy-clad buildings and arcane research create an atmosphere of intrigue, drawing students with a keen interest in both scholarly excellence and the extraordinary.

Healthcare

Widdlington is served by a variety of healthcare facilities catering to its diverse needs. St. Waldobury's University Hospital in Waldobury is known for its advanced medical services and research. James Saville Memorial Hospital in Widdicombe, despite its historical significance, has garnered a controversial reputation due to serious concerns about staff conduct. Dr. Larry Fraser’s Witch Doctor Practice in Walford Heights offers alternative and holistic treatments, adding a unique aspect to the city’s healthcare options. The Walver Health Centre in Walver Lake provides essential medical services to the community. Widdlington’s healthcare system offers a varied mix of services, reflecting both its strengths and challenges in providing accessible and comprehensive care.

Government and Politics

Widdlington, the capital of Waldonia, is the center of the nation’s political life, housing both the ceremonial Queen Mayuri I and the presidential government under President Harris Travers. The city has long been the stage for political upheavals and dramatic shifts in power. Today, it operates under a hybrid authoritarian republic, with President Travers holding significant executive authority. The local government is managed by Mayor Richard Wilkins, overseeing the day-to-day affairs of the city.

The government operates primarily from the Citadel, while Queen Mayuri I resides in a newly built palace in Waldobury Heights. Law enforcement in Widdlington is divided between the Widdlington Police Department and the Waldoshire County Sheriff Department. The city’s political environment remains dynamic and unpredictable, reflecting its history of rapid changes in leadership and frequent regime shifts.

Widdlington, known for its mystical aura and history steeped in the supernatural, is the home of the Masters Council, an ancient international order established around 2,000 years ago. The Council’s mission is to oversee and manage folklore creatures, whether benevolent or malevolent, that are drawn to Waldonia’s supernatural energy. Widdlington’s unique environment makes it the perfect base for the Council, whose sprawling campus operates openly within the city. The Council is dedicated to maintaining balance, training and rehabilitating troublesome creatures, and integrating them into human society. Visitors to Widdlington may even glimpse these operations, as the city embraces its role as a hub for the otherworldly.

Neighborhoods and Districts

Public Services and Infrastructure

Widdlington offers a range of public services, including waste management and utility infrastructure, to support its population and maintain its unique urban environment. Despite the city's size and complexity, the exact mechanisms behind these services remain a mystery. How Widdlington manages its waste, secures essential imports like food, or even sustains its utilities is unclear. The city seems to function seamlessly, but this is attributed more to the whims of the Editor than to any visible system. Residents and visitors alike simply accept that these necessities are provided because the Editor decrees it so.

Tourism

Widdlington attracts visitors with its historical landmarks, cultural richness, and scenic beauty. However, it is said that tourists, like immigrants, are only brought in by The Editor, as this is the only way anyone enters or leaves Waldonia. Key attractions include the Queen’s Palace, the Citadel, and the iconic Wallywood sign. The city's innovative airship service and numerous parks further enhance its appeal to those who find themselves within its borders.

Widdlington’s media landscape features two main national newspapers, The Waldopolis Chronicle and The Wallywood Times.
